Redkite and 21st Century Thame Planting.

It was a lovely sunny day and the hedges were all set up ready for planting. We had the pleasure of working with Redkite and their families who had volunteered to help us plant a hedge in Elms Park. 21st Century Thame were extremely grateful.

21st Century Thame planting hedgerows with Redkite in Elms Park, Thame.

We had a range of hedging whips to plant – field maple, beech and hornbeam. We dug a trench, a metre away along the gated fence and then all the volunteers could start digging to bury the hedging whip roots into place. A great effort from everyone and a lot of hard work for those trench diggers!!

It took us a few hours to get them planted so for a well deserved break, we had lots of cakes to eat and we set up a biscuit decorating station. Biscuit tree shaped shortbreads with green sprinkles and icing, yum.

We planted all morning in the glorious sunshine, chatted and got to meet a lot of lovely families in the Thame area.

The morning ended with the wood chip spreading around the hedges, kindly donated by our tree care friend Julian at JB Tree Care

So thank you to all of those that volunteered and thank you to Redkite for joining forces with 21st Century Thame. Next time you have a walk through Elms park please take a look and enjoy the growing hedge. If you live nearby, could you adopt a section of hedge to water in the next two summers, or do some ad hoc watering when most needed? Just let us know on [email protected]!

Thank you so much to our funders Trust for Oxfordshire Environment with funds from South Oxfordshire District Council for the trees, and our brilliant local business sponsors Lightfoots, BP Collins and Lucy Electric, as well as Thame Town Council for supporting nature recovery projects in Thame.
