21st Century Thame Linking with Local Schools

21st Century Thame runs a wide range of projects that benefit people of all ages, from children to older adults. These include support for local events, educational initiatives, and community outreach. A key area of focus is environmental sustainability. Programmes delivered in local schools and youth centres include topics such as hedgehog conservation, tree planting, recycling, reducing carbon footprints, understanding water habitats and cleaner waterways and many more.

AMAZING TREES!

John Hampden Primary School firstly contacted us with an aim to start recycling their paper. A member of the team from 21st Century Thame managed to find recycling boxes for their classrooms which helped them kick start their recycling mission!

An assembly on the importance of trees and recycling was delivered to the whole school by 21st Century Thame and were aimed at both Key Stage levels. The purpose was to raise awareness about the vital role trees play in our environment and to explain how and why we should recycle paper. Following the assembly, a demonstration was conducted to show the process of paper recycling.

After the demonstration, the Year 3 children were invited to create their own handmade paper using the recycled paper they had collected from around the school. They were fully engaged in the activity and showed great enthusiasm for learning about the papermaking process and the importance of recycling. The session sparked plenty of curiosity, with the children asking thoughtful questions and eagerly sharing their own stories about planting and growing trees.

Children’s hand made paper. The colours were affected by the coloured inks that were in the shredded paper.

The class had an empty tree in their classroom, so the idea was that the children could create insects, birds and leaves out of their recycled paper and hang them around their tree.

21st Century Thame provided the school with leaf, bird and bug stencils so the children could trace the shapes, cut them out and colour their paper once it was dry.

We had a wonderful morning connecting 21st Century Thame with education. The assembly and workshop were very well received by an enthusiastic and well-behaved audience—the children were an absolute delight.

Thank you, John Hampden, for having us!
